- The Kart is situated right in the heart of Oban township on Rakiura/Stewart Island with the sea at your door step. Post Office and the local airline office are neighbouring properties, while the backpacker's accommodation is just across the road. A new Youth hostel is in the process of being built and will also be the neighbouring property to the Kai Kart.
- The Kai Kart is one of a few of New Zealand's old time Pie carts left and originates from Gore, Southland, New Zealand. (see also the book New Zealand Pie Carts by Lindsay Neil.
It was shifted to Stewart Island at the turn of this Millennium.
- The former caravan is stationary now with a veranda roof shelter for visitors and on land leased from the Stewart Island Pavilion Trust (SIPT). It has its own water and power supply. All plumbing and electrical equipment complies with council regulation, so does the commercial kitchen.
Part of the basement of the SIPT building is also leased as
storage room and freezer space.
There are 3 freezers, all purchased in the last 3 years, a fridge /
freezer and a brand new upright chiller as well as shelving
The Kai Kart provides a steady stream of income to the Pavilion Trust; they in return offer a reasonable lease
- The Inside of the Kai Kart has undergone a major upgrade 2 years ago and has been lovingly refitted, the garden and the outside sitting area are in progress to be upgraded
- The SEAFOOD on offer can be taken away or eaten onsite. The Diner offers seating for 8 guests, with views straight into the kitchen. Watch while your food is prepared and cooked.
- The popular seafood like blue cod, green lipped mussels, chowder and flat oysters (Te Ostrea chilensis) are in high demand ………………..and can be supplied all year round.
- The business at present is being operated between October and April. 80% of custom comes from tourism. Local support is fantastic.
The business has a worldwide reputation which is growing every year.
