The Kai Kart (Kai is the Maori word for food) started its life as the Pie Cart in New Zealand's Country Music Capital - Gore in Southland.
The Kai Kart was on its last legs due to age and nearly fell apart when it was carried it over to its current site, but with a little bit of tender loving care it successfully started a new lease of life on beautiful Stewart Island.
Even the locals eat here!
Vanessa and Hilli cook for you 7 days a week and usually we come up with meals you'll enjoy !!.

You can find us in the heart of Oban township close by the Rakiura Museum.
One Backpackers, the local school and the Community Centre are just across the road.
All amenities are in walking distance.
Our comfortable dining area seats eight and the open-plan layout provides a view into the kitchen for guests to watch their meal being prepared and cooked.
Depending on where you sit you might find you get the dishwasher's job for the night!
Outside the Kai Kart we have a sheltered area where diners can wait for their take-away order or can eat at the picnic bench on the lawn whilst listening to the sea lapping the shore of Halfmoon Bay.

Our menu specialties include BLUE COD which is locally caught and is absolutely mouthwatering. If you catch it yourself, bring it in and we can cook it for you. (a small preparation and cooking charge applies)
We also grow our own GREEN LIPPED MUSSELS, so freshness is guaranteed. See the page on the mussel story to know how its done...
OYSTERS! OYSTERS! OYSTERS!
SOUTHERN GLORY OYSTERS, the pearl amongst oysters are on sale here all year round. This popular flat oyster is a delicacy that can not be easily matched. Note that because of the varying size of the oysters they are sold by weight, rather than indivudually. See the page about oysters for more details
SUPER BURGERS are Vanessa's speciality; you should try one, best with beetroot.
We are open from October through to April - 11:30am to 2:30pm and 5:00pm to 9:00pm.
Come and enjoy this lovingly restored piece of Kiwiana - read more about how the Pie Cart became the Kai Kart.
